Dorper Breed Confirmation, Types & Standards
Dorpers have internationally recognised standards for breed. From these standards a point system has been developed to distinguish levels of standards between individual Dorpers.
Dorpers are rated on a points system of 1-5. With 5 being the highest.
- 5 points for Excellent.
- 4 points for Good.
- 3 points for Average.
- 2 points for Below average.
- 1 points for Poor/Cull faults.
These points are then awarded to the animal for various traits or sections these are as follows –
- Confirmation “B”.
- Distribution of Fat “D”.
- Size & Growth “G”.
- Covering “H”.
- Colour “P”.
After points have been allocated for the various traits a final score can be given to an individual sheep to distinguish it from all other sheep. This is referred to as the sheep’s “Type”. These again are number 1-5.
- Type 5 – a top stud animal.
- Type 4 – a stud-able sheep.
- Type 3 – commercial stock.
- Type 2 – commercial stock.
- Type 1 – cull.
The following table provides the matrix to determining the final “Type” of a Dorper.
