Dorper Breed Confirmation

Dorper Breed Confirmation, Types & Standards

Dorpers have internationally recognised standards for breed. From these standards a point system has been developed to distinguish levels of standards between individual Dorpers.

Dorpers are rated on a points system of 1-5. With 5 being the highest.

  • 5 points for Excellent.
  • 4 points for Good.
  • 3 points for Average.
  • 2 points for Below average.
  • 1 points for Poor/Cull faults.

These points are then awarded to the animal for various traits or sections these are as follows –

  • Confirmation “B”.
  • Distribution of Fat “D”.
  • Size & Growth “G”.
  • Covering “H”.
  • Colour “P”.

After points have been allocated for the various traits a final score can be given to an individual sheep to distinguish it from all other sheep. This is referred to as the sheep’s “Type”. These again are number 1-5.

  • Type 5 – a top stud animal.
  • Type 4 – a stud-able sheep.
  • Type 3 – commercial stock.
  • Type 2 – commercial stock.
  • Type 1 – cull.

The following table provides the matrix to determining the final “Type” of a Dorper.
